A Distant Song

A poem for when my time comes to leave this world . . .
Sing for me dear friends!

Sing me to heaven on wings
Of songs soft and low
That still all fears and
Whisper in hushed, holy
Strains about the wonders
Just around the bend.

Sing me to heaven on wings
Of songs that sweep in majesty
Over my soul and bear it
To heights where I get a glimpse
Of my soon-to-be home
That grows longingly in my breast
With each heart-beat.

Sing for me dear friends!
With courage and joy
Even as tears choke the love
That undergirds each note
And shared promises and grace
Infuse each strain echoing
Mysteriously in the halls of
Our mutual household of faith.

Residents of heaven unite!
Sing me home with
Bright notes of gold
And welcomed melodies
I thought I knew
That grow clearer and louder
And purer and Savior-led.

Sing for me dear friends
On earth and in heaven
So that I can move from
This world to the next
In unbroken pulse of
Music here measured and
There unbarred.

Hold your breath
With wondering eye
As my life-song comes
To the Grand Pause
And think of nothing
At that moment
Save that I am safe and securely
Held by the hand of the
Composer of all
And that at His down-beat
My song will go on with
Graceful landing on that
Next phrase in the
Song that never ends.
