Gentle morning dove |
Thank you, Lord
for the gift of sound…
the early call of a lone bird
at the break of dawn,
the swelling chorus of morning
in the tree tops,
the tenor pitch of the
neighbor’s dog barking,
Gift made by granddaughter |
the distant hum of cars
leaving for work,
the splay of water
in the shower,
the fragrant drip, drip
of morning coffee,
the chop, chop of knife
the closing door of the
well-stocked fridge,
the subtle sipping
of a cup-a-Joe,
the voices of those I love
and who love me back,
when he says my name,
the rootedness in hearing
my kids say “Mom,”
the magic sounds flying
out of piano keys,
the pipes that speak, hoot, shimmer
and roar in the organ
chamber,
At the beach with the grandchildren |
the mighty swell and gentle
caress of a choir,
the animated voice
of the preacher,
the multitude of sounds that live
in my cellphone,
computer, TV,
the characters who speak out
their stories from the pages of
a book,
the happy chatter at the beach,
the laughter of children,
the still voice of God
in quiet corners of the heart.

"I shall hear in Heaven."
Yes, Ludwig von Beethoven. Dear, great composer who suffered loss of your hearing during your capstone years. . .yes, in heaven at last you shall hear!
Some historians say these were Beethoven's last words, but others dispute this. Whether they were the last sentence the great composer ever whispered or not, he most likely said them in his final days or hours. The gift of hearing is one never to take for granted or waste listening to things unworthy of the gift.
